Dahab Egypt bombing health care costs assistance

What is it?

Dahab Egypt Bombing Health Care Costs Assistance is an Australian Government initiative for Australians (who are eligible for Medicare) who have out of pocket healthcare costs as a direct result of the bombing which occurred on 24 April 2006. Out of pocket costs are those costs that are not reimbursed by Medicare, other government programs, private travel insurance, or private health insurance. Australians affected by the bombing are expected to use such resources prior to seeking assistance from the Health Care Assistance Scheme. Exceptional circumstances may be considered.

Note: For the purpose of the Dahab Egypt Health Care Costs Assistance Scheme, an Australian is someone who is eligible for Medicare. Only goods and services provided in Australia are covered.

Australians who were physically injured by the explosions will be eligible for assistance for a wide range of health care including medical gaps, costs of medicines, physiotherapy, hearing devices, artificial limbs, psychological services and counselling.

The following kinds of people will be eligible for assistance with the costs of counselling, psychological services and psychiatric services:

  • an Australian who was not physically injured (but directly exposed to the aftermath)
  • a family member of an Australian who either died or who was physically injured
  • a family member of a non-Australian who died as a result of the bombing.

Note: These rebates are only paid after any rebate claimable from private health or any other source of insurance cover has been deducted.

Enquiries about specific eligibility and coverage can be obtained by calling the Medicare Assistance Special Assistance Line on 1800 660 026.
