PBS Reason Codes

 

New Reason Codes for Prescribing Optometrists

On 1 July 2008 Medicare Australia introduced two new reason codes for items to support the introduction of PBS prescribing for optometrists. The new reason codes will inform pharmacists if the item can or can not be prescribed by an optometrist.

Reason code Reason type code Reason text Fix instructions text for approved supplier
584 R Item may not be prescribed by an optometrist.
  1. The item code provided may not be prescribed by an optometrist.
  2. Check the item and prescriber details on the paper prescription match the details provided in your claim.
  3. If they do not match – please correct and resubmit.
  4. For further information please contact Medicare Australia quoting code 584
585 R Item can only be prescribed by an optometrist.
  1. The item code provided may only be prescribed by an optometrist.
  2. Check the item and prescriber details on the paper prescription match the details provided in your claim.
  3. If they do not match – please correct and resubmit.
