Statistical information collected from Medicare Australia administered programs is used, within strict privacy guidelines, to develop and provide health information and services for the Australian community and health sector. These information services are designed to assist health decision-making to improve community health by:
- supporting clinicians to evaluate and improve clinical practice;
- promoting evidence-based approaches to health care;
- coordinating care between medical practitioners and integrating information from different sources; and
- providing health care consumers with information to make more informed decisions and improve access to services.
Significant developments in technology and Internet accessibility have resulted in a focus on the development of online information services.
Information requests
Medicare Australia provides timely and satisfactory responses to statistical information requests. These requests may come from health professionals, public sector authorities, researchers, health providers and individuals. Medicare Australia can provide information about the data it holds and assist users to define their data requirements.

Medicare Australia’s Feedback Reporting Facility (FRF) is also available to the following groups via on this website free of charge. Feedback information available on the FRF is updated on a quarterly basis for a ‘rolling’ 12 month period.

- Remote Other Medical Practitioners
- Optometrists
- Psychiatrists
- Dermatologists
FRF development is under way for the inclusion of practitioner groups who are currently unable to access their feedback via the FRF site. In time, all practitioners will have access to their Medicare Australia Feedback via the FRF site.
Medicare Australia Feedback information (aggregated information relative to Medicare rendered/referred services and summary PBS utilisation) is posted annually to the following groups:
- General Practitioners
- Other Medical Practitioners
- Remote Other Medical Practitioners
- Consultant Physicians
- Dermatologists
- Ophthalmologists
- Psychiatrists
- Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
- Surgeons
- Optometrists
Reprints of Medicare Australia Feedback Information are available to all practitioners for a fee of $50 per report. Practitioners may apply for Medicare Australia Feedback by forwarding a signed letter of ‘request’ on practice letterhead (accompanied by a cheque for $50 made payable to Medicare Australia) addressed to/ for the attention of:
