Policy Consultation

Medicare Australia has traditionally maintained open and successful communication channels with its key stakeholders. In December 2001, Medicare Australia established a formal stakeholder consultation framework to enable its key stakeholders the opportunity to provide regular input and advice on key business initiatives being administered by Medicare Australia. The consultation framework comprises a Stakeholder Advisory Committee and small number of supporting committees, representing different groups within the health sector. These committees include a Doctors' Communication Group, a Pharmacists' Communication Group and a Consumer Advisory Committee.

Medicare Australia's Stakeholder Advisory Committee, provides strategic advice to Medicare Australia on all major business change initiatives such as Medicare Australia's business improvement program (ie re-engineering of Medicare Australia information systems to enable Medicare Australia to engage with its stakeholders in an eBusiness environment). The Stakeholder Advisory Committee is chaired by Medicare Australia's National Operations Manager and comprises representatives from key medical and pharmacy industry groups, private health insurance, consumer, information technology and telecommunications bodies and representatives from the Department of Health and Ageing. In some instances specific issues or initiatives require more detailed consultation with a particular group in the health sector. Where this is the case the Stakeholder Advisory Committee will refer the matter to one of it's supporting committees.
