I am very proud to be part of the Medicare Australia IT Graduate Program. Even though we are Graduates, we are involved in real tasks and projects that are used to enhance our knowledge and skills, not only in IT areas but also about Medicare Australia as an organisation. The Medicare Australia’s Graduate Program is a great way to make the transition from full-time study to full-time work. Graduates are involved in tasks and projects from early on ensuring that they are able to begin learning about Medicare Australia’s systems from the beginning. Help is available from all staff, not just your buddy, and previous Graduates can provide advice at a peer to peer level. Each Graduate is given a role in the organisation that is relative to their respective background. I came into Medicare Australia as a Graduate after completing the NICP (National Indigenous Cadetship Program) in 2007. On completion of my degree I received assistance in relocating to Canberra from Queensland and a career path in a large Department with room for promotion. Graduates also receive a salary above the national average for university Graduates in IT, ongoing mentoring and support from Medicare Australia staff and opportunities to further my knowledge with training and development courses. The work environment at Medicare Australia is diverse and the staff are friendly and supportive. Medicare Australia has organised regular meetings for Graduates to meet each other and to discuss issues and to provide feedback.
