About the graduate program
Program objectives
The graduate program is a great way to attract educated and talented people to the organisation. The graduate program also lets us develop a group of potential leaders for Medicare Australia, the Department of Human Services and the wider Australian Public Service.
Our graduate program provides the framework for career development to help you move from university into the workforce. As a graduate, you will be given the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills and an in-depth knowledge of Medicare Australia and the Government so you can operate successfully in a range of positions across the Department of Human Services and the broader Australia Public Service.
The main features of our program are:
- a generous remuneration package with a starting salary of $52 327 per annum (APS 3) and up to 15.4 per cent superannuation
- fast-tracked career progression/advancement to an APS 5 with a salary of $62 483 upon successful completion of the 12 month program
- contemporary employment conditions, including access to generous leave and flexible working arrangements
- variety and choice in the work you undertake, with opportunity for work rotations in interesting and challenging roles throughout the organisation and Department of Human Services
- the opportunity to work on projects to improve the health and well-being of Australians
- the preference to begin in one of two intakes per fiscal year

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the Department of Human Services National Graduate Program within Medicare Australia you must:
- be an Australian citizen (applicants selected for interview must provide evidence of Australian citizenship such as a birth certificate, Australian passport or citizenship certificate.) If you are not an Australian citizen, but are eligible for citizenship by the commencement date, your application may be considered.
- have completed a minimum Bachelor-level degree with a credit average or higher
- have completed the Bachelor-level degree within the last:
- 4 years for generalist graduates
- 5 years for Psychology and Social Work graduates
- 7 years for ICT graduates

Program structure

You will have the option to choose from one of the following start dates:
- August 2010
- January/February 2011
Our graduates are rotated through at least three roles or distinct projects throughout the 12 month program.
All rotations are designed to challenge you with projects or tasks mutually agreed between you and your supervisor. The type of work you may find yourself doing during your workplace rotations include:
- developing and implementing strategic policy
- undertaking research and analysis
- writing for the Minister’s office
- contributing to the take-up of electronic claiming
- undertaking long-term planning on future workforce structure and capabilities
- contributing to budgeting, audits and financial management
- developing and producing internal and external communication
- providing legal advice on a variety of subject matters relevant to Medicare Australia
- working with key stakeholders to implement new policies
- contributing to the development and management of environmental programs
- development of ICT systems, including testing technique processes and automation toolsets
- ICT business analyst roles.
At the beginning of each rotation, you will develop a Performance Support Agreement (PSA) and work plan with your supervisor. This agreement will set out the objectives and tasks of the position and identify the skills and knowledge you will need to develop.
At the end of each rotation your supervisor will report on your performance, which is an opportunity for you to discuss your performance targets and developmental needs.
